The Best Hostel in Finland is Laivahostel S/S Bore

Laivahostel S/S Bore in the city of Turku has been selected as The Best Hostel in Finland 2020. The hostel is located on the west bank of the Aura River in the historic S/S Bore steamship, completed in 1960. The election was made by the Board of the Finnish Hostel Association based on votes given by hostel customers. The selection emphasized the uniqueness and experience of the hostel. The hostel customers gave a total of nearly 600 votes to all hostel in the network.

The city of Turku started the hostel operations at S/S Bore in 2011. The former cruise ship moved from the tourist service center to the Turku Vocational Institute at the beginning of 2018. The ship has since developed into a multi-field learning environment with daily hostel accommodation services as well as restaurant and conference activities. In addition, students from different fields of studies are able to deepen their studies in a real working environment on board.

S/S Bore’s choice was justified in a public vote as follows:

  • “The special nature of the experience cannot be argued! The history of the ship is interesting and well presented. The old-time atmosphere is well preserved. It’s like being on a real cruise on a steamboat!”
  • “Laivahostel S/S Bore was an experience. Great atmosphere, friendly service and a wonderful ambience.”
  • “Culturohistorically unique. Great breakfast and good services. It’s awesome that they are able to run such a great business with the power of education!” 

The Forum Marinum Museum Vessels

Laivahostel S/S Bore has a sensational cruise feel from the 60’s. The ship has 120 cabins and 250 beds. The cabins are for 1–4 people and most cabins have private washing facilities. Breakfast is served daily however, S/S Bore’s other restaurants serve as pre-order. During summer, the café on the sun deck is open daily. The ship has meeting facilities for big and small events. Hostel guests can spend time in the common lounge. The hostel also organizes “travel evenings” open to all, and bingo nights and live music in the summer. The S/S Bore ship is part of the Forum Marinum Museum Vessels and the museum’s exhibition on the ship’s history is visible on the ship’s top decks.

Each year The Finnish Hostel Association has been awarding a hostel within the network as The Best Hostel in Finland since 2004. Last year’s winner was Tapion Tupa in Kalajoki.
